The doctor was kind, though well rehearsed, when he told me you’d be dead in a few hours. I made the requisite phone calls, and now the family is trickling past in groups of two or three, offering hollow words of sympathy. I’m tempted to tell them I wished for this day every night of my childhood.

I can tell you
a story, paint a picture of a girl too scared to tell of an action she doesn’t understand, too confused to recognize her own pain, too hurt to remember.
I’ve come to know her well. She cried in my arms as her mind and body remembered, she raged at me when her silence hurt more than his touch, and I held her hand as she began to heal.
Her eyes ask me for proof that someday the pain will end, the nightmares will no longer haunt he
